The London Dams that Never Came to Wales

Talk by: Richard Rees

One day when RIchard Rees was researching the Central Wales Railway in Aberystwyth he came across an estimate to divert the railway out from the Irfon valley.  The estimate was titled London Water Welsh Reservoirs and Works. Thus began many journeys to London to bring the proposals to light.

This is an account of the proposed plans in 1899 to supply London with Welsh water. The plans were apparently at quite an advanced stage. Had it gone ahead, much of Mid Wales as we know it today would have gone.

Speaker biography

Richard Rees lives in Llanwrda, Carmarthenshire.  He is a Fellow of the Institute of the Motor Industry and an advanced Automotive Engineer.  Due to an accident he recently had to retire.  He has two grown up children. Angharad and Gareth. The pillar of the family is Margaret.

Richard has always had an interest in water supply and closed railways and has walked over  800 miles of closed railways, seeing first-hand the destruction caused by Beeching and Marples.  When he uncovered the London water scheme he was shocked and became “like a dog with a bone”.  He is still researching the topic.
