Art Group

Sesshu Toyo

In July 2018 the art group met at the Rock Park where Steve Ashley gave a repeat performance of the presentation he first gave to the art history group on the work of the master Sesshu Toyo who worked in ink wash and was the “Turner” of his day, changing formulaic landscape painting to creative atmospheric masterpieces.

It’s the first time our group has started with a presentation. It will not be the last! It was truly inspiring and several of us spent the next hour happily engaged in experimenting with the techniques we had been shown. I for one thoroughly enjoyed and can appreciate the lifetime it would take to master what appears so deceptively simple. Thanks Steve. I can see a lot of happy and frustrating hours ahead!
